An Oral History Of Apple Design: 1992–2013 | Co.Design

Most efforts to explain design at Apple end up reducing a complex 37-year history to bromides about simplicity, quality, and perfection–as if those were ambitions unique to Apple alone. So Fast Company set out to remedy that deficiency through an oral history of Apple’s design, a decoding of the signature as told by the people who helped create it. A longer version of the story that includes material not published elsewhere is available in the Byliner original ebook, Design Crazy.

Cool Bookish Places: The National Library of Israel | BookRiot

I’m cheating a little with this one. See, the National Library of Israel is definitely a cool bookish place, but it doesn’t strictly….exist. At least not yet.

At this point, the library is in its design and competition phase, but Moshe Safdie, just released high-resolution renderings of his proposed design, and it is marvelous.

New York Fashion Week opened earlier this week, and we’re celebrating with a list of essential fashion documentaries that go behind the scenes of the industry.

via 10 Essential Fashion Documentaries | Flavorwire.

I have watched The September Issue and Valentino: The Last Emperor and thought the subject matter fascinating. I highly recommend watching any of the films on the list just to see a glimpse of driven creative genius at work, as well as the uncompromising visions of the designers and fashion elite. These films and the others on the list are must see for fashion, art and culture aficionados. They are well worth watching to capture a glimmer of understanding of the fantasy that is the fashion industry and the effects of the fashion machine on society.

‘Most Amazing, Stupendously Clever’ Little Free Library of the Day | Shelf Awareness

Checking in at Little Free Library’s Facebook page is always fun, but a post yesterday was so mesmerizing that even the LFL folks couldn’t resist exclaiming: “Is this the most amazing, stupendously clever, epic, mechanically excellent (?!) and stunningly cool Little Free Library ever? It’s a kinetic sculpture! A neighborhood art piece! Destined for the Museum of Modern Art? The Walker? The Guggenheim? Have you ever seen anything this fab?”

OpenDesk.cc Is Like Ikea For Open Source Zealots | TechCrunch

Furniture is probably the last thing on the mind of most open source proponents but now it doesn’t have to be. OpenDesk is a free, open source line of furniture that you can make yourself or order unassembled from a maker with a CNC machine. Not only is the furniture cheap – free if you have the wood and hardware – it’s actually cool-looking.

Created by Joni & David Steiner and Development 00, OpenDesk is the first project that is compatible with FabHub, a site that allows you to search for fabricators in your area. You could also find someone with a ShopBot to cut the pieces for you and drop them off at your domicile or office.
