Deadlines to enter fall 2013 MLIS/MIS/MLS/MAS programs are fast approaching. Below are links to a few useful resources. I found the Library School forum at Library Journal particularly helpful during my application process.

UPDATED: Letters to a Young Librarian | When Publishers Attack

UPDATED: News: Book publisher to drop lawsuit against McMaster librarian – Tame the Web (March 4, 2013)

“I feel like Edwin Mellen suing Dale [Askey] is yet another escalation in this increasingly adversarial relationship between publishers and librarians.” via Letters to a Young Librarian: When Publishers Attack.

The ALA President Maureen Sullivan responded today to this lawsuit.

As a recent MLIS graduate and future librarian, I will be following this lawsuit closely. In my opinion, publishers/presses have bigger (re: Amazon) concerns to focus their resources on than suing librarians for libel.

Overcoming Instruction Stage Fright « Hack Library School

“When I began a student assistant position in reference and instruction this semester, the time to brave the classroom arrived without my previously anticipated sense of preparation and confidence. I was excited and terrified. A part of me believed that I could be quite good, while the other part waited for the fraud police to stop me before I could present my novice self to a class of undergraduates.”

Trends include curation for discoverability, online open courses, flipping and makerspaces.

We practiced flipping in my Emerging and Innovative Technologies LIS class. Through flipping I have increased my ability in critical thinking, assessment and evaluation, but this method did make the class more burdensome on the students to generate discussion in class and complete required readings before class.

I’m sure Gabriella Coleman’s upcoming book Coding Freedom: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Hacking will be a fascinating read!  I completed an Information Security weekend workshop during my MLIS program and we discussed hacking and how easy it is for hackers to compromise systems. We also discussed pros and cons of hacktivism. I would have to take a full-credit course in Information Security but it was not offered at the time. I could see Coleman’s research integrating well within the curriculum.
