Washington Post sold to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos for $250m | Media | The Guardian

Bezos told the Post that as its new owner he would be entering “uncharted terrain” that would “require experimentation”. He tried to assuage those who fear his reign might bring editorial interference by saying “there would be change with our without new ownership. But the key thing I hope people will take away from this is that the values of the Post do not need changing. The duty of the paper is to the readers, not the owners.”

72% of Online Adults are Social Networking Site Users | Pew Research Center

The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has been studying online adults’ social networking site use since 2005, and has seen substantial growth since then. Today, 72% of online adults use social networking sites. Although younger adults continue to be the most likely social media users, one of the more striking stories about the social networking population has been the growth among older internet users in recent years. Those ages 65 and older have roughly tripled their presence on social networking sites in the last four years—from 13% in the spring of 2009 to 43% now.

In this report we also studied online adults’ use of Twitter. The percentage of internet users who are on Twitter has more than doubled since November 2010, currently standing at 18%. Internet users ages 18-29 are the most likely to use Twitter—30% of them now do so…via 72% of Online Adults are Social Networking Site Users | Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project

Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer: Search is far from over | Internet & Media – CNET News

Mayer, who spent 13 years in the maw of search at Google, thinks Yahoo has a chance for a breakthrough in search that could lead to growth. Search, which can convey a lot about user intent, leading to more dollars per click, is the rocket ship that led Google to $14 billion in revenue for its last quarter. But Yahoo doesn’t own a search engine. For now, Yahoo is partnered with Microsoft for search results, which limits the scope of what those Ph.D.s could do to revolutionize search.

Mayer is taking the long view. “Search is far from over,” she stated in the interview. “It’s physics in the 1600s or biology in the 1800s. There’s miles to go before you get to quantum physics or even a microscope. There’s a lot of that you can do once you have mobile, and we are going to be very focused on the user experience.”

”Arduino this, Arduino that. What is Arduino anyway? If you want the official definition from the Arduino website, it is “an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for  artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.” In layman’s terms, it’s a little board that you can use to create interactive stuff and connect it to sensors, lights, motors and other outputs.
