Free e-book: Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out | Tame The Web

Full title: Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out: Kids Living and Learning New Media.

From the series forward: This book series is founded upon the working hypothesis that those immersed in new digital tools and networks are engaged in an unprecedented exploration of language, games, social interaction, problem solving, and self-directed activity that leads to diverse forms of learning. These diverse forms of learning are reflected in expressions of identity, how individuals express independence and creativity, and in their ability to learn, exercise judgment, and think systematically.

10 Arduino Projects That Blow Our Mind | Stephen’s Lighthouse

”Arduino this, Arduino that. What is Arduino anyway? If you want the official definition from the Arduino website, it is “an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for  artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.” In layman’s terms, it’s a little board that you can use to create interactive stuff and connect it to sensors, lights, motors and other outputs.

Placing Literature maps book scenes in the real world | Crave – CNET

Go behind the scenes of a new site based in Google Maps that combines geography, technology, and literature into a crowdsourced map of real locations from novels.

Eventually, users should be able to harness the site to put together trips, like a visit to the China sites mentioned in “The Joy Luck Club,” or a regional tour of Laura Ingalls Wilder locations. The potential for use in education and academic research is also tremendous.

An interesting new interactive concept from Google that furthers the idea of gamification. Cycling and Tour de France enthusiasts will find this website fun and educational. Users are able to navigate stages of the 2013 Tour de France and explore the whole event. I would recommend viewing on the tablet or mobile device as the interactive experience is unwieldy on the laptop using a trackpad and some pages take time to load completely.
