Using data from the Skeptic’s Annotated Bible, programmer Daniel G. Taylor created this encyclopedic visualization of 463 of the Bible’s major contradictions. Here’s how to read it: Each vertical blue line represents a different chapter, ordered chronologically. The red arcs trace each represent a question about a specific person or concept.  Clicking on one of the red lines takes you to a list of every relevant quote from both Old and New Testaments.

It’s simple, as the world has gotten easier because technology has gotten better since touch screens have gotten touchier and social networks have filled every social void in our empty soul, we’re still searching for substance. Too often social networks can result in the technological equivalent of empty calories—sure it feels good to get liked and sounds good to chat but it’s not as genuine and fulfilling as real life.

Shimi Cohen was inspired by Sherry Turkle’s book Alone Together and created this wonderful animation that discusses the ‘innovation of loneliness’.

SAPL To Debut Digital Commons, Test “Public Proof” OverDrive Kiosk | The Digital Shift

As a beta tester for OverDrive, SAPL will be experimenting with an installation of the company’s new OverDrive Media Station (OMS) interface on a ruggedized kiosk that could be deployed in public areas outside of a library.

SAPL will be featuring the OMS interface on a Zivelo M32 Floor Display, a pedestal-mounted kiosk made with an aircraft-grade aluminum enclosure. With swipes and taps that will be intuitive for anyone who has used a tablet or smartphone, patrons can navigate the OMS interface to explore a library’s collection of ebooks, audiobooks, music, and videos, and easily read or listen to samples, place holds, or have an available ebook sent to their tablet, e-reader, or smartphone.

72% of Online Adults are Social Networking Site Users | Pew Research Center

The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has been studying online adults’ social networking site use since 2005, and has seen substantial growth since then. Today, 72% of online adults use social networking sites. Although younger adults continue to be the most likely social media users, one of the more striking stories about the social networking population has been the growth among older internet users in recent years. Those ages 65 and older have roughly tripled their presence on social networking sites in the last four years—from 13% in the spring of 2009 to 43% now.

In this report we also studied online adults’ use of Twitter. The percentage of internet users who are on Twitter has more than doubled since November 2010, currently standing at 18%. Archaeologists Discover World’s Oldest Calendar in Scotland | Gizmodo

The discovery of a near 10,000-year-old lunar calendar in Scotland has archaeologists scrambling to rethink the beginnings of history. The implications are huge, too. It turns out that the men of the Stone Age weren’t as primitive as we’d previously thought.

The calendar itself is primitive to be sure. However, it’s also the oldest calendar ever discovered predating the bronze calendar in Mesopotamia that had held that title until now by several millenia.

New data from the latest survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project in the spring shows that 85% of Americans adults use the internet at least occasionally.  Five years ago, in an April 2008 survey, 73% of adults used the internet.  Ten years ago, in May 2003, 63% of adults used the internet.

Reddit, the self-proclaimed “front page of the Internet,” has finally earned a place at the social network table.

The online community, which allows people to submit content and vote it up or down based on interest, is used by 6 percent of U.S. Internet users, according to the Pew Research Center.

This Just In: Young Adults Love Libraries | The Digital Shift

A brand-spanking-new Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life study (just released this morning) has found some surprising information about young people and their opinions of libraries and print books.

Here’s the lead:

Belying the stereotype that younger Americans completely eschew print for digital, those ages 16-29 have wide-ranging media and technology behaviors that straddle the traditional paper-based world of books and digital access to information.

One major surprise in a new report from the Pew Research Center is that even in an age of increasing digital resources, those in this under-30 cohort are more likely than older Americans to use and appreciate libraries as physical spaces – places to study for class, go online, or just hang out.
